1. TWENTY CASES IN SPAIN TIED TO A SHOPPING CENTER
==================================================================
Health officials believe a shopping center in Torrevieja, Spain is linked with 20 cases of Legionnaires' disease that have been confirmed since 5 December. At least 14 of the ill persons are not from Spain. Sixteen were hospitalized. Officials suspect, but have not confirmed, that cooling towers are responsible. They also investigated ornamental fountains and irrigation systems.

==================================================================
2. TWO CASES AT A NYC CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
==================================================================
Two Rikers Island inmates were diagnosed with Legionellosis in October. Both are men, aged 25 and 44 years. The domestic water system was chlorinated. The water was also tested, but apparently not until after the disinfection procedures were carried out. The Department of Health is monitoring the health of inmates and correction employees.

3. INDUSTRIAL WATER TANK LINKED TO LEGIONELLOSIS
==================================================================
Two cases of Legionellosis have been linked to an industrial water tank used in a welding cooling system. The open water tank was located between a fan and the two men who became ill. A high count (1300 cfu/ml) of L. pneumophila serogroup 1 was found in the tank water. The tank was disinfected and covered. No more cases were detected. The full report is posted at http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/183_09_071105/letters_071105_fm-2.html. (Many thanks to Bill Gaines for forwarding this paper.)

4. LEGIONELLA TRAINING COURSE APRIL 27th IN CHICAGO
==================================================================
Matt Freije will teach the training course “Legionella and Other Waterborne Pathogens: Minimizing Risk in Building Water Systems” on Thursday, April 27th, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The course will cover how to minimize the risk of Legionella and other waterborne pathogens in hospitals, hotels, and office buildings. Many of the principles apply to industrial facilities also. The course is for facility managers, safety officers, infection control coordinators, industrial hygienists, public health officials, plumbing inspectors, plumbing code officials, and those that offer services related to water treatment, plumbing systems, cooling towers, indoor air quality, industrial hygiene, or infection control. The tuition of $445 is discounted to $395 for early registration. Details are posted at http://hcinfo.com/seminar3.htm.
